Creating Homes for Wildlife

Tiny Forests at Camden Road Park (2020):

An oasis of biodiversity with planting, bird
boxes and a bug hotel to encourage local wildlife.

Swift and Bat Boxes (2021):

Swift boxes installed at the Guildhall, one equipped with a camera for covert
wildlife observation. We eagerly await occupancy in 2025.

A swift caller donated to attract swifts to the boxes.

Bat boxes installed at Maendu Well to help support our nocturnal mammals.

Sustainability in Action

Declaring a Climate Emergency (2021): A formal commitment to tackling climate
change.

Carbon Audit (2022): A full review of Brecon Town Council’s carbon emissions to
identify and help reduce consumption.

Recycling in Parks and Greenspaces (2022): New collection and sorting systems
implemented for plastics, cans, glass, and paper.

Recycling at Events: Dedicated recycling bins to minimise landfill waste and manual
sorting of waste to maximise recycling opportunity.

Encouraging Solar Panel Installation: Advocating to the planning authority for
support of solar panel applications to promote renewable energy adoption.

Engaging the Next Generation

Wildlife Packs for Schools (2021):  Distributed seeds, planting guides, wildlife information, bird boxes, and insect hotels to inspire young conservationists.

Keeping Our Town Clean

Clean-Up Initiatives: Participation in regular litter picks and clean-up events to help make our town a welcoming and eco-friendly place.

Innovative Habitat Projects

Maendu Well (2023): Tree surgery and habitat creation.  Land and pond management in consultation with habitat specialists.

Island Fields Acquisition: Secured under a long-term lease as a public open space, this area is undergoing climate and carbon mitigation planning. A public consultation is underway to gather community input on its future use.

Energy Efficiency Upgrades

Guildhall Improvements (2024): A new boiler and energy-efficient measures to
reduce carbon footprint.

Promoting Active and Eco-Friendly Practices

Active Travel Considerations: Incorporating walking, cycling, and sustainable
transport into planning and stakeholder engagements.

Remote Working & Car Sharing: Minimising travel emissions wherever possible.

Green Procurement: Prioritising contractors with strong climate actions and
choosing eco-friendly products like sustainable toilet paper.

Community Collaboration

Wildflower Meadow Maintenance: Supporting a wildflower meadow, town centre planters, and green spaces while reducing weed killer usage.

Tree Planting Projects: Llanfaes Park received new trees in 2024, with support extended to other similar town projects.

River Usk Pollution Prevention: Leading efforts to prevent pollution, with anglers encouraged to follow “check, clean, dry” practices.
